Transmission Service: Debunking Myths and Understanding Reality
“My Transmission Isn’t Serviceable” – Fact or Fiction?
- Fact:
- There is always a way to fill the transmission, even if it seems elusive.
- Factory Practices:
- Manufacturers indeed fill transmissions at the factory. However, the process varies.
- Dipstick Tube with No Stick:
- Some manufacturers install a dipstick tube without the actual dipstick. To check fluid levels, you’ll need to purchase the specific “tool.”
- It’s a clever way to save costs during production and funnel customers to the service department. Please don’t shoot the messenger! This was not our choice or our design!
- No Dipstick or Tube:
- Certain vehicles lack a dipstick or tube altogether.
- Instead, they can be filled from underneath the vehicle.
- Caution: These setups have specific fill procedures that require the vehicle to be level and at the correct thermostatic temperature.
- Professional Handling: Filling fluid in such cases should only be done by a trained professional.
- Incorrect fluid levels can lead to transmission failure.
Why the Absence of Dipsticks?
- Profit Motive:
- One industry opinion suggests that omitting dipsticks and other small components is a cost-saving measure.
- Imagine saving $10.00 on manufacturing for every vehicle produced. Multiply that by millions of models, and the savings are substantial.
- Whether these savings are passed on to consumers remains uncertain.
- Forced Service Visits:
- By eliminating dipsticks, manufacturers may subtly encourage more visits to service departments.
- After all, they sell new cars and parts.
- Remember: We didn’t design the vehicles, but we’re here to service them.
- You Be the Judge:
- Consider the trade-off between convenience and the need for regular servicing.
- Again, don’t shoot the messenger! We’re fellow humans navigating the same automotive landscape along with you.

Transmission Services to Avoid: What Not to Get!
At Dusty’s Transmissions, we believe in transparency and providing quality service. Unfortunately, some automatic transmission services out there prioritize profit over doing what’s right for you.
Here are the types of services you should avoid
- Service Without Replacing a Serviceable Filter:
- Fact: Some services skip replacing the filter, claiming it’s unnecessary.
- Our Stance: We always replace serviceable filters. Even some dealerships wrongly claim that filters can’t be replaced, but we know better! How do we know better? Because we have been transmission rebuilders since 1979! If you are not sure, then give us a call.
- Cooler Line Flush Systems: Not if there’s a serviceable filter!
- Common in the Market: Cooler line flush systems are popular but problematic.
- How They Work: These systems flush through the transmission cooler system, diluting the fluid instead of directly exchanging it.
- Missing Filter Replacement: The critical question remains: What about the filter? If the filter is not serviceable this is a viable option, but only if the filter is not serviceable.
- Transmission with a Sump or Pan:
- Serviceable Filter: If your transmission has a sump or pan, it has a serviceable filter.
- Catch: The filter cannot be replaced without removing the sump or pan and some transmissions have a filter integrated into and part of the pan.
- Drain and Fill Services: Not if there’s a serviceable filter!
- Drain and Fill Services: typically change less of your fluid.
- No Filter Replacement: Plus, they don’t replace the filter!
- Dipstick Tube “Exchange” or “Flush”:
- Misleading Approach: These services suck out fluid through the fill location and replace only that amount.
- Reality Check: It’s worse than a drain and fill, as it barely replaces a few quarts of fluid.
- What About the Filter?
- Chemical, High-Pressure, or Reverse Flush: Beware!
- Myth Debunked: The myth that flushing your automatic transmission causes problems or failure was born here.
- Our Take: This is not the right way to do the job.
- Fact: Incorrect flushing methods can lead to catastrophic failure, leaving your car undrivable, call us!
Choose Wisely
At Dusty’s Transmissions, we prioritize your vehicle’s health and longevity. Avoid these services, and let’s keep your transmission running smoothly!
Transmission Flush with Filter Replacement Service
At Dusty’s Transmissions, we take pride in offering a specialized service that goes beyond the ordinary. Our Transmission Flush with Filter Replacement Service is designed to ensure optimal performance and longevity for your vehicle’s transmission. Here’s why it matters:
The Importance of Proper Maintenance
- Routine maintenance is the key to reducing major repairs and extending equipment service life.
- Modern electronic transmissions, although reliable, are more susceptible to issues caused by contaminants.
- Thousands of intricate parts, valve components, clutches, bearings, and friction points make up the powertrain. Over time, these components accumulate contaminants from the lubricating fluids circulating through the system.
- These contaminants act like aggregate or sandpaper, gradually wearing down critical components.
What Does Our Complete Transmission Flush Service Include?
- Vehicle Scanning and Trouble Code Recording:
- We scan your vehicle’s electronic systems and record any trouble codes.
- If trouble codes exist, we conduct a pre-service test drive to ensure proper operation.
- Transmission Sump or Pan Inspection and Cleaning:
- We remove, inspect, and thoroughly clean the transmission sump or pan (if applicable).
- This step ensures that any accumulated debris or particles are removed.
- Comprehensive Component Inspection:
- Our technicians inspect all transfer cases, differentials, and powertrain components specific to your vehicle’s application.
- Any findings during inspection are discussed with you, and records are maintained accordingly.
- Filter Replacement or Cleaning:
- We replace the filter or screen with high-quality components.
- If applicable, we thoroughly clean the filter to ensure optimal performance.
- Fluid Flushing and Replacement:
- ALL the fluid (Automatic Transmission Fluid - ATF) is flushed and replaced with the correct high-quality fluid suitable for your vehicle.
- Fluids chemically break down over time and through heat cycles, so regular replacement is essential.
- Proper Reinstallation:
- We reinstall the sump or pan using high-quality pan gaskets or approved sealants specific to your application.
- Precise Fill Procedure:
- We follow the correct fill procedure and maintain thermostatic conditions.
- The use of the right high-quality fluid, matched to your vehicle’s VIN identification, ensures optimal performance.
- Additional Benefits:
- Our service helps maintain smooth shifting, prevents overheating, and prolongs the life of your transmission.
- It’s especially crucial for heavy-use vehicles, where shorter service intervals are recommended.
